Aerosol drug delivery is becoming increasingly important for a wide variety of therapeutic materials, providing a means of rapid delivery with high bioavailability. The Spraytec’s new Inhalation Cell is designed to support pharmaceutical development by enabling the rapid characterization of systems such as dry powder inhalers (DPIs), metered dose inhalers (MDIs) and nebulisers.

The Spraytec, when used with the Inhalation Cell, provides:

  • Wide Dynamic Range: allows characterisation of fine drug particles and any excipients within a single measurement. The interactions between these can then be characterised, yielding a better understanding of how drug particle formation or dispersion occurs.
  • Rapid Data Acquisition: An unequalled 10kHz data acquisition rate provides a true understanding of the drug delivery profile observed during device actuation.
  • Instant Analysis: Hundreds of measurements can be achieved each day, enabling faster, more efficient testing. Rapid screening of new devices and formulations is therefore possible, highlighting possible improvements and design modifications.
  • Versatile Measurements: Can be used in-line with other measurement devices such as cascade impactors, allowing correlations to be made with traditional techniques.
  • Flow Rate Independent Operation: The Spraytec measurement is not affected by changes in flow rate, allowing the output of an inhaler to be followed for patient-like breathing profiles.

The Spraytec system delivers the dynamic data required to fully understand the operation of inhaler and nebuliser systems, providing researchers with the information required to develop the novel technologies required to achieve reproducible respirable drug delivery. This is all achieved within in a product that meets the requirements for validation within the pharmaceutical industry, including 21 CFR Part 11 technical compliance.
